The philosophy of Adult Day Care is rooted in the age old tradition of taking care of oneself and one’s family members at home. As our loved ones age, this can be difficult to manage, since the needs of the person often conflict with our work and family responsibilities. With community support and services, however, many individuals are able to remain living in their own homes, cared for by family members or others. Adult Day Care offers a viable alternative for families/caregivers to access services to meet medical, social, emotional and physical needs all in one place, providing respite and peace of mind for caregivers. There are two types of Adult Day Care: a social model and a medical model. A social model is just that – it provides activities and socialization for registrants on a regular basis in a supervised environment. An Adult Day Health Program, such as the Adult Day Health Program at Gurwin, provides socialization while also meeting the health and wellness needs of registrants. A day at Gurwin’s Adult Day Health Program (ADHP) starts with door-through-door pick-up with a contracted transportation company. Breakfast is served, and professionals in nursing, social work and rehabilitation work as a team to be sure that all registrant needs are met. We provide access to lab work, x-rays, podiatry, dental services, and many other medical specialties in our in-house clinic, making it easy and convenient to receive necessary care. Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies are also available for registrants in need of these services. While the medical and nursing care we provide is key to keeping our registrants healthy, the remainder of the day is spent in any number of entertaining pursuits, including live musical concerts, art therapy, arts & crafts, yoga, adult education, book club, cooking club, bingo, card games, dominoes, and many others. Lunch is served, tailored to special dietary requirements that are established in consultation with our dietitian. Special programs for Spanish-speaking registrants, as well as those with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, are also offered. The Adult Day Health Program at Gurwin is open six days a week (Sunday through Friday), and the hours are flexible. If you think you or a loved one might benefit from an Adult Day Health Program, give us a call today.
