Call for Entries: Gurwin's 31st Annual Photo Contest Is Open!

The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is pleased to announce that the 31st Annual Photo Contest is now accepting applications.   Amateur photographers and students are invited to submit their best photos for a chance to win a recognition award and cash prizes –and the opportunity to have their work permanently displayed in the Center’s renowned Tiffen Gallery for the enjoyment of residents, staff and visitors.

Nearly 1000 submissions are received each year from across the globe and are judged by a panel of professional photographers for clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center.

Grand Prize, Honorable Mentions, as well as a Best-in-Show winner will be awarded in 12 categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Student, Altered/Enhanced, Long Island/ New York and Action/ Sports. Gurwin residents and staff also weigh-in on their favorites for a “Resident/ Staff Selection” winner.  Photos not selected for a prize award are repurposed as reminiscence aids, for visual stimulation and art therapy, providing a source of comfort and inspiration, specifically for residents in the Center’s Memory Care Unit and Adult Day Care Programs, making each photo submission a “winner.”

Contestants may submit up to seven color or black and white photographs at a fee of $5 per photo. Entry forms are available for download by clicking here or  via email at info@gurwin.org or by calling the Gurwin Public Relations office at (631) 715-2757.   Printed  8”x 10” or 8”x 12” photos must be accompanied by a completed entry form noting credit card payment information or with a check payable to Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and sent to Gurwin Center at 68 Hauppauge Rd., Commack, NY 11725, attention: Gurwin Photo Contest.  Deadline for submissions is April 15, 2024.

About our Unique Photo Contest

This year marks Gurwin’s 31st year hosting Long Island’s premier photography contest.   Each year, submissions are solicited from amateur photographers and students from all over the world.  Up to seven 8×10 printed photos are accepted per photographer at a $5 donation per entry.  Photos entered are judged by a panel of professional photographers, and winners in each category, as well as Best In Show honors, are presented at an awards ceremony in early summer.  Photos chosen by our judges are enlarged to 20×28 prints, beautifully frame and displayed permanently in our 460-bed nursing and rehabilitation center for the enjoyment of our residents, staff and visitors.  Every entry is a winner in our unique contest, in that submitted prints are used in art therapy and reminiscence programs for residents and adult day program participants throughout the year.

On behalf of the 460 residents who call Gurwin “home,” their families, and our staff and volunteers, thank you to all those who entered for sharing your talent with us.  Enjoy perusing through our 2023 Winner’s Gallery:
