Occupational Therapy

When an individual is recovering from a traumatic injury, stroke, orthopedic surgery, cardiac event or an extended hospital stay, it is often difficult to carry out basic activities of daily living, such as dressing, showering or cooking.  Even getting into and out of a bed, chair or car can be a challenge. 

At Gurwin, our Occupational Therapy program works together with other rehabilitation disciplines to create a comprehensive treatment program that will get our patients on the road to independence as quickly as possible, enabling them to once again take part in an independent, active lifestyle.  Our Occupational Therapists work together with each patient and his or her family members to determine individual goals and a plan of treatment to reach those goals.

Services provided by our Occupational Therapy staff include:

• Activities of Daily Living (ADL) retraining
• Home and Community Management, including kitchen management tasks
• Upper and lower extremity clothing management
• Bed mobility
• Bathing techniques and toilet transfer training
• Car transfer training

Besides addressing the basic activities of daily living, our staff also evaluates the patient’s home environment, determining what equipment, if any, is needed after the patient returns home, as well as if there are any home modifications necessary for the patient to return home safely.
