Commack, NY- Huntington Town Councilwoman Susan Berland presented Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center with a Proclamation recently declaring the week “National Therapeutic Recreation Week.”
The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center (Commack) is participating in the celebration of National Therapeutic Recreation Week, inconjunction with the National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS). Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center residents will celebrate throughout the week with events encompassing cultural, interdepartmental, physical and wellness activities.
National Therapeutic Recreation Week, which was established by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society, has been celebrated since 1984. The purpose of National Therapeutic Recreation Week is to enhance awareness of therapeutic recreation programs and services, and to expand leisure and recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities within the local community.
Therapeutic recreation uses treatment, education and recreation services to help people with illnesses, disabilities and other conditions to develop and use their leisure in ways that enhance their health, functional abilities, independence and quality of life.
Therapeutic recreation programs and services are provided in a safe clinical setting everyday all year round at the Gurwin Center. The center’s Therapeutic Recreation programs have won state-wide awards for their innovative and dynamic content. Gurwin residents and staff have participated in National Therapeutic Recreation Week for two decades, and are looking forward to a future filled with passion, purpose and progress for our residents.

The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a 460-bed nursing care facility located in Commack, Long Island.
