Commack, NY— Celebrating its 21st year of raising vital funds for the Gurwin Jewish Healthcare Foundation, the Leonard Ugelow Memorial Gurwin Classic will be held at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury on August 31. The Foundation is pleased this year to honor four individuals who inspire through their commitment to philanthropy and the Long Island community.

Miriam and Robert Caslow are long-time friends of Gurwin, and recently Miriam joined the Board of the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center as an associate director, serving on the Strategic Planning Committee. She serves on the Board of Directors of UJA-Federation of New York, is a past member of UJA-Federation’s Caring Commission Cabinet, and worked with UJA Federation’s Task Force on Health, Healing and Hospice. She serves on the board of the Jewish Women’s Foundation of NY currently as Grants Chair, and is on the Board of the Community Synagogue in Port Washington. Miriam received her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and is a Board Certified physician in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology with a special interest in geriatrics.

Robert Caslow is Vice President of Acme Smoked Fish Corporation, the largest fish smokehouse in the US. Acme, a fourth generation family-owned business, was founded by his grandfather Harry Brownstein in 1954. He is a past member of UJA-Federation’s Board of Directors as well as past Chair of UJA-Federation’s Missions Department. Robert has traveled with UJA-Federation around the world to places including Cuba, Poland, Ukraine, Moscow, Italy, and Israel. Most recently, Robert has joined the volunteer Ambassador Program at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Honorees Robert M. Goldberg and Norman A. Schefer are also long-time supporters of Gurwin, making the connection between the Fay J. Lindner Foundation and Gurwin more than 20 years ago. Norman serves the Foundation as a Director and Treasurer, and Robert is President. Throughout the years, the Fay J. Lindner Foundation, for which Gurwin’s assisted living community and short-term rehabilitation wing in the nursing & rehabilitation center are named, has provided the necessary funds to enable Gurwin to continue moving forward in providing a full continuum of care for adults within the community. Both Robert and Norman have been instrumental in guiding the Fay J. Lindner Foundation to its current prominence on Long Island, where it supports more than 80 charities.

Robert Goldberg was an educator and administrator in both the New York City and Oceanside school systems for more than 30 years. He has authored six social studies textbooks, and is also a partner in commercial and residential real estate on Long Island. Robert also serves as president of the Diane Goldberg Foundation, which focuses on assisting those with mental illness.

Norman Schefer is a developer and manager of apartments, offices, residential homes, and commercial and industrial real estate for almost 60 years. He is the manager of Marvin L. Lindner Associates, LLC.
